As Spanish is the third most spoken language worldwide, following Chinese Mandarin and English, one should take into account that for Spanish speakers in central- and south-America, where education often isn’t as easily available as in most western countries, the need to learn English is not that high. You will thus realize that as soon as you get off the plane in a Hispanic country, communication will be very difficult if you don’t speak at least the basics of Spanish. Also, Hispanics generally are very open people. It is very common for someone to walk up to you and start asking questions out of genuine interest. If you don’t speak Spanish this can be awkward, whereas if you do it can become a really interesting cultural experience! Guatemala for example is a country where Spanish is spoken without an accent, making it fairly easy to travel and improve your Spanish!
